Snapchat: Good or Bad?

Hey Sweet Friends,

I hope that you are having a wonderful start to your week. I am sure you have just gotten home from school and maybe you jumped in the car and began to scroll through your latest Snapchats. This app is quickly becoming the most popular for teens today. This month, I would like to answer the question, is Snapchat good or bad?

Before we can declare something good or bad we need to look at the definitions first.

According to Webster’s dictionary…

  • “good” means: of a favorable character or tendency.
  • “bad’ means: failing to reach an acceptable standard.

So what is favorable character? How do we determine our standard?

Jesus shared the standard in Matthew 22:37-39 (NASB). “And He said to him, “ ‘YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEARTAND WITH ALL YOUR SOULAND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’ “This is the great and foremost commandment. “The second is like it, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’ ”

So here is how you know if Snapchat is good or bad. Ask yourself two simple questions.

  1. Do my Snapchats reveal that I love God?
  2. Does my Shapchat account love others well?

An example of an account that does not love God and others would be cursing, sending or viewing nude pictures, sexting, making fun of someone, gossip, etc. Also, do we spend more time on the app than we do with God and people in person? If snapchat is an idol in your life, it needs to be recognized. When we become obsessed with something or someone, our hearts are not loving God first and that is a dangerous place to be.

An example of a Snapchat that does love God and people would be one that shares funny pictures to make someone laugh, sending an encouraging message to a friend, using clean language, being grounded in who you are regardless of if someone asks you to do someone inappropriate, removing or not friending those who have the wrong intentions, and setting up boundaries to guard your heart.

As you and I ponder our use of Snapchat, I pray that we will be wise. I ask that the Lord will guide each one of us in the convictions that we need personally. I hope that we can be the ones that use Snapchat for good and not bad. Together we can have fun and encourage others through this fun app!

In Christ,

Emma Danzey
