If you had an expensive tomb, prepared for when you passed away, Would you ever give it to a stranger?
One of the most interesting moments during the resurrection was when Joseph of Arimathea gave his tomb to Jesus. He was a wealthy man who was fearful of what others thought about him. But after Jesus was killed, Joseph went to Pilate and requested Jesus’ body to give Him a proper burial. What an amazing act of faith and reverence!
John 19:38-42 Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders. With Pilate’s permission, he came and took the body away. He was accompanied by Nicodemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. Taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs. At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid. Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation and since the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
There are some key points I want us to look at today.
1: Joseph was a secret disciple of Christ. Maybe you are trying to hide your faith out of fear like Joseph? When the going got tough he knew who to turn to. Joseph probably missed out on the blessing of unashamedly following Jesus, but God was gracious enough to use him anyways. We need to be careful about only waiting for moments of dire need to turn to the Lord, and honor Him daily.
2: Joseph gave his best and his future to God. Even though Joseph had a trust issues, after Jesus gave up His life on the cross, he gave Jesus his best. He acted in faith and provided Jesus with his expensive tomb. Not only that, Joseph prepared the Savior’s body with Nicodemus. (The man who Jesus told that we must be born again – John 3:3)
3: Jesus was buried in a garden. This was a mind-blowing moment! Jesus’ dead body was placed in a garden as a reminder that He was removing the sins of all people dating back to the Garden of Eden where the very first man and woman sinned. There had to be Perfect death in order for new life to return to humanity.
Jesus was not in this grave for very long. In fact, He resurrected Himself and the stone was rolled away from the tomb.
Are you all in for Jesus? What is it that He may be asking you to give Him in order to keep Him first. Do you truly believe that He took away all of your sins?
Jesus was not crazy, He was not just a ‘good man.’ Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to God except through Him. Jesus is the key through the pearly gates of Heaven. He is the great I Am!
There is no magical formula in becoming a Christ follower. All you have to do is recognize that you are a sinner and accept that Jesus took your place.
I pray that you are encouraged and keep your eyes open this Easter season to the fact that Jesus died for YOU. If you were the only person on this earth, He still would have given the ultimate sacrifice. He has given us His life, may we give our lives back to Him for His glory and honor just like Joseph of Arimathea!
